A children's book (loved by adults as well as kids) is based loosely on a real-life love story and the creation of an old-world style carousel in Salem, OR.
Francis meets Kate in 1921. They fall in love, marry and raise family. One day, many, many years later, Kat's sweet, old heart just quits beating. Broken-hearted and lonely, Francis gets involved in the building of a new carousel. After adopting a horse and having it designed in memory of his late wife, he decides he must also adopt a mule named Francis, so it can stand next to Kat's horse on the carousel. The night of the grand opening, after everyone has gone home, Francis is alone with the carousel horses. He hears Kat's voice. She tells him to climb on the horse, and he joyfully joins her in a late-night, magical adventure.
Did it really happen, or was it only a dream? It had all seemed so real. But if it was just his imagination, how can anyone explain how Francis really got his wink?
